The brief for the Artarmon House project was to create a contemporary addition to the 'Californian Bungalow' dwelling that embodied both place and longevity in the design outcomes. Key to this approach was to ensure that the spaces worked around the habits and lifestyle of the inhabitants.

The brief was achieved by implementing open and dramatic entertaining spaces with hidden spaces of rest. A monochromatic scheme, raked ceilings, abundance of light with the use of stainless steel features, all worked in concert to dramatise the space for entertainment and everyday living. The open living, dining and kitchen addition to the rear utilises the outdoor living spaces and rear yard which are accessed via large glazed openings brings in both light and ventilation. The monochromatic colour scheme creates a complementary backdrop for the eccentric and colourful artworks displayed in various rooms, and reflects the inhabitants' personalities and life journeys to date.

The Artarmon House was a finalist in the Residential Exterior category of the Dulux Colour Awards in 2012. Click here to view other awards won by Bijl Architecture.
