Bijl Architecture Director Melonie Bayl-Smith's co-authored paper (with Institute of Technology in Architecture, ETH Zurich's Philippe Block and her colleague at the University of Technology Sydney School of Architecture Dave Pigram) has been published in the Brookes eJournal of Teaching and Learning, a highly respected peer reviewed journal with a double blind review.
Called "Pass me the mixing bucket: The Ribbed Catalan studio as a design/research case study", the paper examines high-level learning and the physical process of building in architecture schools via a design build studio that was held at UTS in 2012.
Students were asked to experiment with designs for a tiled vault with networks of structural ribs using computer program RhinoVAULT in combination with a hands-on prototyping and testing process. The paper examines the outcomes of the studio and draws conclusions for implications in architecture pedagogy into the future.
